Pamphlet Stitch Binding

Someone asked me if I had instructions for my pamphlet stitched binding for my Trees artwork... So I wrote something up.

My artwork paper was 7"w x 10.5"h and the actual artwork covered 6.5" x 10" leaving about 1/4" on all sides that would fit under the framing.

I used a white Canson Colorline for my internal pages and the frames cut from black Michaels Recollection cardstock. The outside cover is a textured unknown brand cardstock.

1) Cut your white cardstock to 16" x 11" and fold in half.

Note: I used Lineco adhesive book binding tape as an added layer of protection/strength on the fold area both on the outside and on the inside  prior to adhering my frames.

2) Cut your black frame cardsock to 8" x 11", then pencil in your 3/4" border all around and cut out the center drop out piece. (you can use 1of the pieces for the pocket.) Adhere a frame using 1/4" double sided adhesive and placing it on the outer edges of the left, right and bottom sides, then adhere to the white cardstock page matching the folded edge and bottom edge first, then adhering the other edge.

3) Repeat on the other 3 sides of the white folded cardstock.

Note: I do not recommend using more than 2 folded pieces of the white cardstock nested together. It will get too thick.Add another signature if you need more pages and adjust you spine widths.

Punch your holes through both layers. First hole - find your mid point. Holes 2 and 3 are equidistant from the center hole and at least 3/4" away from the top and bottom edges. (red dots on template image)

Cut your cover as per the template or adjust as needed from the black cardstock. (Stonehenge would be good for this)

Using one of your pages as a template, punch your holes in your cover in the center of the 1/4" spine.

Cut your thread or gauzy ribbon. Double the length from the top and bottom holes plus whatever need to tie a nice bow, I usually cut 4 lengths in total.

Note: do not use thick or heavy ribbon. You need something that is very flexible like gauze and about max 1/2" wide. I used a Sari ribbon.

Binding: start with the tails of the ribbon on the outside and go thru the middle hole leaving about 1 length of the ribbon on the outside. From the inside go up to the top hole and thread thru to the outside. Bring your thread to the bottom hole on the outside and thread thru to the inside. Then back up to the middle hole and thread to the outside. Make sure the threads are on either side of  the center thread.Tie a knot then a bow.

Adhere a pocket on the inside and a closure on the outside.
